Research studies have shown that systematic, explicit phonics instruction in early grades can have significant benefits in promoting literacy skills (Adams, 1990; Beck & Juel, 1995; Chall, 1996; Chall & Popp, 1996). Phonological or phonemic awareness activities can be used in both one-on-one and whole-class instruction to support this learning.
Activities to Assess Phonological Instruction
Assessing phonological awareness is essential in promoting literacy skills. There are various phonological activities that students can participate in to help develop phonological awareness. These activities include segmentation tasks, identifying syllables and phonemes, blending tasks, rhyming tasks, and manipulating tasks. These activities allow students to identify phonemes and recognize different ways of breaking down spoken language into smaller components.
Phonological and Phonemics Awareness Assessment
Phonemic awareness strategies can be particularly useful for students with dyslexia. A teacher can use a test of phonological awareness to assess students’ phonemic awareness levels and provide strategies in future lesson plans. Various phonemic awareness activities can be used to assess students’ literacy skills, including naming the letters of the alphabet, reading CVC words, reading long and short vowel words, sentence reading, dictation, and phonic drills.
Benefits of Ongoing Phonemic and Phonological Awareness Assessments
Ongoing assessments of phonemic and phonological awareness can provide teachers with valuable information about students’ reading abilities and progress. These assessments can help teachers identify students in need of additional phonemic and phonological awareness support, and adjust their lesson plans accordingly.
